Celebrating Black Philanthropy Month: August 2024

August 1st, 2024 by

As August 2024 approaches, we are reminded of the importance and impact of Black Philanthropy Month (BPM). Initiated in 2011 by Dr. Jacqueline Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network, BPM is a global celebration that acknowledges the generosity, legacy, and contributions of Black philanthropists.

What is Black Philanthropy Month?

Black Philanthropy Month is an annual global celebration and a coordinated campaign to promote Black giving. It aims to recognize and promote the significant contributions of Black philanthropists, raise awareness about the value and impact of their giving, and inspire others to participate in philanthropic activities. BPM is observed throughout August, featuring events, discussions, and initiatives that highlight the power of Black philanthropy in addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.

The Significance of Black Philanthropy

Black philanthropy isn’t just about monetary donations; it embodies a tradition of giving back through time, talent, and resources. Historically, Black communities have navigated systemic challenges and, despite these obstacles, have consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to communal support and upliftment. From mutual aid societies formed during the era of slavery to contemporary foundations, the spirit of giving has been a cornerstone of Black culture.

Celebrating and Empowering Communities

Black Philanthropy Month serves multiple purposes:

1. Recognition and Celebration: It recognizes the historical and ongoing contributions of Black philanthropists. By highlighting these stories, Black Philanthropy Month aims to inspire and motivate future generations.

2. Education and Advocacy: It provides a platform to educate broader audiences about the importance of philanthropy within Black communities and advocates for increased participation and support.

3. Collaboration and Innovation: Black Philanthropy Month fosters collaboration among philanthropists, non-profits, and communities to develop innovative solutions to persistent challenges.

1. Attend Events and Webinars: Participate in events hosted by organizations that celebrate Black Philanthropy Month. These events can provide insights into the current state of Black philanthropy and ways to get involved.

2. Support Black-led Organizations: Financially support organizations that are led by Black individuals and are dedicated to advancing social, economic, and educational opportunities within Black communities.

3. Volunteer: Offer your time and skills to initiatives and projects that are designed to benefit Black communities.

4. Share Stories: Use social media and other platforms to share stories of Black philanthropists and their impact. Highlighting these narratives can help spread awareness and inspire others.

5. Educate Yourself and Others: Take time to learn more about the history and current state of Black philanthropy. Share this knowledge with your network to broaden the impact.

Moving Forward

As we observe Black Philanthropy Month in August 2024, let us reflect on the enduring legacy of giving within Black communities. By celebrating, supporting, and participating in BPM, we contribute to a more inclusive and equitable future where the contributions of all philanthropists are recognized and valued.

This August, let’s make a commitment to honor the past, celebrate the present, and build a brighter future through the spirit of philanthropy.
