As June rolls around, I find myself in a jubilant mood, not just because it’s my birthday month but also because it’s Pride Month—a time of celebration, reflection, and unity for the LGBTQ+ community. This year, I want to take a moment to not only celebrate my identity but also pay homage to the country that shaped a part of who I am: Congo, Kinshasa.
Embracing Pride Month Pride Month is more than just rainbow flags and parades; it’s a commemoration of resilience, acceptance, and love. Growing up, I navigated my journey of self-discovery and acceptance, and Pride Month has always been a beacon of support and affirmation, especially having to remember the soliders of Pearl Harbor and my birth month are significance. It’s a time when we come together, celebrate our diverse identities, and advocate for equality and inclusivity.
Congo, Kinshasa— The vibrant culture, the rhythmic beats of Congolese music, and the warmth of the people have left an indelible mark on my heart. Despite being fragmented memory, I carry a piece of Congo, Kinshasa with me—a tapestry of memories, family stories, and traditions that remind me of my heritage.
Blending Identities Navigating multiple identities—growing up in understanding and support of the LGBTQ+ community and havibg a genetic makeup of Congolese Heritage —has been a journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Embracing both aspects of my identity has not only enriched my life but also allowed me to celebrate the beautiful tapestry of diversity that makes us who we are. It’s about embracing all parts of ourselves unapologetically and finding strength in our uniqueness.
As Pride Month unfolds and I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the power of love, acceptance, and embracing our authentic selves. This blog post is a celebration of Pride Month, a tribute to Congo, Kinshasa, and a testament to the beauty of embracing our multifaceted identities. May this month be filled with love, pride, and acceptance for all.
