From Draft to Published: Navigating the World of Book Publishing

March 8th, 2024 by

Hello, dear readers! I’m Jenny Toussaint, RN, BSN, and author. Today, I’m thrilled not only to share the journey behind my upcoming book, “A Preceptor’s Guild to Float Nursing,” but also to offer some guidance and tips for new authors embarking on their publishing adventure.

The Journey Begins

My journey into the world of publishing began with a passion for nursing and education. Writing has always been my way of reaching out, teaching, and connecting with others in my field. When I decided to publish my first book, I quickly realized that the path from manuscript to bookstore is filled with learning opportunities and challenges.

Choosing the Right Publisher

After drafting my second book, “A Preceptor’s Guild to Float Nursing,” the choice of Milton and Hugo Publishing felt right. Their dedication to uplifting educational content and supporting their authors every step of the way was exactly what I needed. Finding a publisher that shared my vision was crucial in bringing this book to life.

The Writing Process: A Labour of Love

Writing, especially on topics you’re passionate about, is incredibly rewarding. It requires discipline, organization, and, most importantly, heart. My weekends were often spent writing and revising, fueled by the desire to share my knowledge with fellow nurses. Remember, consistent effort turns dreams into reality.

Advice for Aspiring Authors

  • Dive Into Research: Understanding your subject inside out is essential, but don’t overlook the importance of researching the publishing industry. Knowledge is power, and being well-informed will help you make the best decisions for your book.
  • Build Your Network: Connect with other yourself first as a writer and then join writing/ editing groups.
  • Embrace Editing and Feedback: No book is perfect on its first draft. Professional editing and constructive feedback are invaluable. They transform good writing into great books.
  • Market Yourself: Start promoting your book early. Use social media, author websites, and book events to build anticipation and connect with your audience.
  • Persistence: Rejection is part of the process. Each no brings you closer to a yes. Stay resilient, and never lose sight of your goals.
