Rune casting

October 14th, 2024 by

Runes drawing, also known as rune casting, is a form of divination using symbols from the runic alphabet, an ancient writing system used by Germanic and Norse cultures. Each rune symbol carries specific meanings and interpretations, often related to life events, challenges, or guidance.

When drawing runes, individuals typically select one or more stones or tiles inscribed with rune symbols. The meanings of these symbols are then interpreted in relation to the querent’s question or current situation, similar to how tarot card readings provide insight and guidance. The number of runes drawn and the spread can vary depending on the type of reading desired.

Some common aspects of runes drawing include:

  • Single Rune Draw: Offering quick insights or daily guidance.
  • Three Rune Spread: Focusing on past, present, and future influences.
  • Rune Layouts: Similar to tarot spreads, with different patterns providing more detailed readings.

Runes are often used for spiritual insight, personal reflection, or decision-making.

Dear Readers,

Today, I’d like to introduce you to something ancient yet deeply insightful—Rune Casting. For centuries, the runes have been a powerful tool for divination and spiritual reflection, providing guidance much like tarot cards. Each rune in the Norse alphabet holds its own unique meaning, often connected to aspects of life like relationships, challenges, and personal growth. When drawn, these runes help us tap into ancestral wisdom, connecting us with the past to inform our future.

For my rune casting on October 13th, 2024, I drew the rune Othala, which is closely associated with “Home,” inheritance, and legacy. Othala symbolizes the passing down of values, resources, and wisdom from generation to generation. It reminds us to reflect on what we’ve inherited—not just materially, but also spiritually—and how these legacies shape who we are.

In this moment, Othala speaks to me as a time to recognize my lasting legacy and spiritual heritage. It invites me, and perhaps you as well, to consider how we align our values with what is truly important in life. What have we learned from those who came before us? What values do we carry forward, and how do they guide us in navigating our challenges today?

Othala also brings forth the notion of communal prosperity. It emphasizes the importance of contributing to the well-being of those around us—family, community, and society as a whole. There is beauty in coming together, in recognizing the shared resources and values that unite us. This rune encourages us to embrace those connections, to appreciate the ways in which we are supported by our communities, just as we support them in return.

As I reflect on Othala, it feels like an invitation to look deeper into the cultural and spiritual heritage that forms the backbone of my identity. For me, this is a time to honor what’s been passed down, while also recognizing that I am creating my own legacy—one rooted in values, relationships, and the pursuit of what truly matters.

As you explore the idea of rune casting and what it can offer, I encourage you to think about your own inheritance—not just material things, but the wisdom, values, and traditions passed down to you. How do they influence your decisions and shape your journey? And what legacy are you building for future generations?

With gratitude,
Jenny Toussaint
